The amazing Moerangi track is rough and raw, it will challenge both your physical fitness and your technical ability. The guided ride will start around 10am and usually takes around 5-6 hrs, depending on fitness levels. During this point to point ride you will experience some of the most remote forest in the North Island that laced with crystal clear streams running through steep valleys. At the end of the trail you will be met by out shuttle and taken to Taupo where you will spend the next two nights.
DAY 4 • Craters MTB Park and Huka Falls Trails • Grade 2-4 • 30 to 50+ km
Taupo has an amazing trail system that links the town centre to Huka Falls and Craters MTB park. This great network boasts up to 90km of single track that seamlessly links various areas of forest, gulleys, and river banks. It’s all beautifully maintained by a local trail building and advocacy group called Bike Taupo. You will be picked up by our shuttle in the morning at taken just 5mins out or town to the Hub Cafe, where we will fuel up and start the ride. The ride takes in dozens of kilometers of flowing singletrack through pine plantation, native bush, and along the banks of NZ longest river to Huka Falls. The ride ends at the cafe again, and you can either hop in the shuttle for a very short drive back to your accommodation or you can choose to ride a little more of the river trails back to town.
Day 5 • Great Lake Trail • Grade 3 • 30 – 63km
The Great Lake Trail showcases the amazing and untouched shores of Lake Taupo. Renowned mountain bike guidebook writer Jonathan Kennett has labeled it as “the best Grade 3 trail in New Zealand” and it is rightly so. It’s built by riders who know how to make trail that is a joy to ride for both beginners and experts a like. Today you will be picked up from your Taupo accommodation and shuttled 1hr out the start of the trail. You then have 30km of single track riding along gorges and lakeside cliffs before descending to a remote beach where you will be pick up by boat (it’s the only way out, there is no road access to this amazing place). After the essential boat ride you have options: ride more, eat lunch, drink coffee, swim, ride even more, or a combination of all the above. Distances and pick up locations are customisable on this day. At the end of the ride you will be shuttled 20 mins back to Taupo. The Great Lake Trail includes the famous W2K trail and the new epic Waihaha-Waihora Trail.
The Rotorua and Taupo accommodation is not included in the package price. These two destination towns are packed with accommodation options and price points, so you might like to make that choice yourself. We can help you narrow the options.
We know there are lots of different types of people into mountain biking and they all come with their own different tastes and budgets, so we’ll let you choose and book your own accommodation. We will suggest some good accommodation options that work well with the tour logistics.
If you want us to supply the complete package with the accommodation included, we will book your accommodation in Rotorua and Taupo, and add a 10% booking fee. Contact us for details.
A high fitness level and moderate to high level of bike skills are required for this tour
While in the mountain bike parks we will be focussing on trails that are Grade 3 and up. We will tailor our selected tracks according to the groups needs and skill levels. The most technical backcountry ride is the Moerangi Track which is Grade 4.
Expect to be on your bike for around 3-6hrs per day
The longest day by time will either be the Moerangi Track or one of the days in the Redwoods. The longest day by distance is likely to be the Great Lake Trail, depending on the options you choose on the day it can be up to 63km.
The group size for this tour can be anywhere from 4 to 10 people
Singles or couples may join other groups to share in transport if applicable to make up the minimum numbers. The minimum of 4 people is due to the length of the shuttle journeys and associated time and running costs. Ask us whether we have others going on the dates you are interested in.
This tour is partially guided (3 out of 5 days are guided), so the guide will informally structure the rides so the group can catch up with each other at key places, and allow everyone to make the most of the knowledge the guide can provide. However we realise that not everyone wants to ride with others all the time. If you want to explore some of the trail yourself you are not expected to stay with the guided group. We want you to have the best possible experience and enjoy “at your own pace” riding as much as possible. In the mountain bike parks this may mean that you split from the group to ride some harder or easier trails. You may simply like to catch up with the other riders and the end or share some tales from the trail over a meal. Mountain biking is an independent sport, but is also a social activity, and we aim to make it’s fun for everyone.
Why is the Rotorua and Taupo accommodation not included?
We allow you to book this yourself because we know that cyclists come in all shapes an sizes, and so do their budgets. We can provide recommendations.
Can the Rotorua and Taupo accommodation be included?
Yes. We can book it for you at one of our preferred providers, but it will subject to a booking fee that is the equivalent of 10% of the Taupo accommodation price.
What if I only want to ride 4 of the 5 days?
No problem. Just let us know when you book and we will discuss details.
Can I add more riding days?
Yes. We are happy to add more rides to the start and or end of this itinerary. The Central North Island has a lot more trails that what is included is in this tour. Let us know what you are interested to ride, or just ask us for our suggestions about what to ride next. We can customise either end of this itinerary.
I am a single rider, can I join an existing group?
Yes. Once we meet the minimum numbers, then we can have singles join the group. We simply don’t allow a single to be the first person to book on a tour. If there is a tour that as not yet met the minimum numbers, then we will take your details as an interested rider, and let you know as soon as it is available for you to book.
What if the weather is too wet to do the Moerangi Track?
We will make a decision based on the our knowledge of the trail and current weather condition. If need be will will substitute it for another trail that rides better in the wet, or a trail with optional distances and that is not so remote.
Can I hire a bike from you?
Yes. We have full suspension and hard tail models available as well as E-bikes. Full suspension bikes are recommended for this tour. All our bikes are high quality and very well maintained.
I see this has some guided days, what if I want to ride on my own?
You may not want to ride with others all the time. If you want to explore some of the trail yourself you are not expected to stay with the guided group. We want you to have the best possible experience and enjoy “at your own pace” riding as much as possible. In the mountain bike parks this may mean that you split from the group to ride some harder or easier trails, and meet up with the guide later.
Where should I park my car while I am on the tour?
You should make arrangements with your accommodation provider to leave it there. If that is not possible contact us for an alternative. If you leave your car in Rotorua you will want the added extra transport from Taupo back to Rotorua at the end of the Tour.
